Joyce E. Means

Author of Pancho Villa Days at Pilares

Joyce was born in Valentine, Texas. She spent a big part of her childhood in Pilares, which is near Valentine. She is a graduate of the Travel and Recreation program of Mesa College, Grand Junction, Colorado. Also upon the reccomendation of Virgina Workman, she is listed in the book, Personalities of America. She has four youngsters, Paul, Christine, Roger and Renee Thompson, and she is an old fashioned Baptist. She hopes to make Valentine and Pilares as famous as Hollywood, California, and North Pole, Alaska, where she lived for some time.
In 1953, someone forged Joyce's name to a letter to Mr. Fix It in the Oregon Journal. The response was such that it helped get a permanent Post Office at North Pole.

You might not find Pilares, Texas, on the map anymore! Pilares, which is located somewhat south of The Rimrock from Valentine, had a change in its name over the years. When John and Mary Daniels moved their post office from Porvenir to Pilares, about 1933, they continued to use the Porvenir cancellation stamp. So the old Pilares is now known as Porvenir. (Do not confuse this with El Porvenir.) E-Mail Joyce at: joycemeans@aol.com
